- Story Text: South Africa batsman Herschelle Gibbs arrived in India on Wednesday (October 11) after a six-year self-imposed absence and is set to be questioned by police in a cricket match-fixing case dating back to the year 2000.
The 32-year-old opening batsman landed in Mumbai around noon to a frenzied media reception before being whisked away from the airport to the team hotel. A large number of Indian media waited at both the Mumbai and New Delhi airports on Tuesday night following conflicting reports about the player's arrival.
Gibbs is due to meet senior Delhi police oficials following a probe into corruption in the game during South Africa's tour of India in 2000.
Gibbs was subsequently fined and suspended for six months by the South African board after admitting he agreed to under-perform in a one-day international on the trip in exchange for money.
The offer was relayed to him by then South Africa skipper Hansie Cronje, who was subsequently banned from cricket for life. Cronje tragically died in a plane crash outside the city of George, about 500 kilometres east of Cape Town in 2002, aged 32.
Gibbs has declined to tour India since then over fears he may be detained.
