- Story Text: Officials of the state government conducted an aerial survey of the lower areas of Leh and its adjoining region such as Zanskar and Kargil in India's northern Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday (August 8), to assess the damage caused by Friday's (August 6) sudden cloudburst and unexpected flash floods.
Relief and rescue operations are in full swing to help the victims of the disaster.
Personnel of the Indian army are engaged in delivering relief material to the needy.
"Today I went to see the lower side (of Leh and its adjoining region), bridges have collapsed at many places, houses have been washed away at many places and people have died too. In the lower side like the upper side, we need to work a lot there. National highways and bridges have been damaged at many places, miles of area are under slush - that has to be cleared," said Nuwang Rizvi, Tourism and Craft Minister of Jammu and Kashmir state.
Scores of people, mostly migrant labourers have left the area and they claimed that the rescue operation was not up to the mark.
"These dead bodies have been lying for three days but there is nobody to take care of them. It belongs to the police department but they are ignorant about it. Why are they ignoring our Kargil people?" said Shamsad Ahmed, a local.
Reportedly, at least 137 people have been killed and more than 350 injured in the floods since Friday (August 6), which damaged houses, telephone masts and government buildings in the regions.
The cloudburst is a localised weather phenomena representing highly concentrated rainfall over a small area lasting for few hours. This leads to flash floods which can cause landslides, house collapse, traffic disruption and human casualties on a large scale. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
