- Story Text: Indian diamond traders said on Tuesday (January 12) the reported detention of 21 diamond merchants in China will hurt their industry.
They said the traders who were allegedly charged with diamond smuggling in the Shenzhen city are innocent.
"I believe that our industrialists can do no wrong. Today, as we can see, India is fast emerging as a global power and relations between China and India are getting stronger. They (Chinese officials) have detained some Indian diamond traders, but I think it has no basis," said Praveen Nanawati, a diamond trader.
Local media said the traders were detained on January 8 and the Indian embassy was expected to get access to them on Wednesday (January 13) S.K. Seth, president of the Gujarat Diamond Association, said the detention would hamper trade between the two countries.
"Whatever is happening is not good for the diamond industry. Trade between China and India is quite good, and if something of this sort happens, then the Indian diamond traders in China will come back and this is not good for the diamond industry," said Seth.
Indian media reports said the detention of the Indians in China comes at a time when some Chinese nationals working in India have been encountering visa problems. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
