- Story Text: The Indian cricket team arrived at Hyderabad in India's southern state of Andhra Pradesh on Sunday (August 19) ahead of the first Test match against the visiting New Zealand.
The Test match would be played on August 23.
Thrashed 2-0 by the West Indies in their most recent series, New Zealand faces an even more difficult assignment when they meet India in the first Test at Hyderabad.
Led by skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, a spirited Indian team checked in at the hotel with spirit of achieving victory in the ensuing Test match.
India would start this series without the services of hometown hero, VVS Laxman, who announced his instant surprise retirement from Test cricket.
Laxman announced his retirement from international cricket after having played for 16 long years in both versions of Test and one day international (ODI) cricket matches.
Laxman, who made his Test debut against South Africa in 1996 in Ahmedabad, became part of the famous batting quartet also comprising Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid.
He got his first Test half-century (51) in the second innings of his debut match against the South Africans, but it took him another 29 innings before he got his first Test hundred - a magnificent 167 against Australia in the Sydney Test.
Laxman also played 134 Tests, amassing 8,781 runs at an average of 45.97, with his highest being the monumental 281 against Australia. His innings of 281 against Australia at Kolkata in 2001 that was ranked sixth in the Wisden's list of 100 great Test innings in the history of the game.
After the Test match at Hyderabad, the second match in the series would be played at Bangalore, commencing on August 23. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
