Three train coaches and a locomotive were derailed following a blast in India's eastern state of Jharkhand on Tuesday (June 23).
The blast, by suspected Maoists, occurred on the tracks near a bridge.
Public Relations Officer at Indian Railways, Anil Saxena, explained what is thought to have happened.
"As per the preliminary information reaching at the headquarters, the loco pilot of the ill-fated train heard some blast sound and he tried to control the train. As a result, one loco, and three coaches next to the loco got derailed," he said.
While no casualties have been reported so far, passengers on the next station at Daltonganj were left stranded as they waited for the train.
Akbar, a passenger waiting at Daltonganj, said people were scared to hear of the derailment.
"We are very scared hearing about the incident. People are gathered at this station and are getting their tickets cancelled," he said.
The incident happened on the day Maoists called for shutdown in Jharkhand to protest the killing of their 12 colleagues by police earlier this month.
The Maoists, also known as 'Naxals' in India, seek the violent overthrow of the Indian state and have fought authorities for decades, particularly in rural areas of central and eastern India where they enjoy some support.
They say they are fighting to give poor farmers and landless labourers control over their land and a greater claim on mineral wealth exploited by mining companies. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
