- Story Text: China on Thursday (August 15) called for restraint and dialogue after Egyptian security forces crushed the protest camps of supporters of the deposed Islamist President Mohamed Mursi and shot nearly 200 of them dead.
"In reply to questions on Egypt, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said that China urges all relevant parties in Egypt to put national and the people's interest first, maintain a maximum of restraint to avoid more casualties, bridge differences through dialogue and negotiations, restore order and social stability," an anchor from state television CCTV said, quoting Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei.
Wednesday (August 14) was the bloodiest day for decades in the Arab world's most populous nation. At least 235 people were killed, including at least 43 police, and 2,000 were wounded in clashes that spread beyond Cairo to towns and cities around the country.
In Jakarta, hundreds of Muslims held a peaceful rally to call for an end to bloodshed in Egypt.
Protesters, men and women, gathered in the city center holding photographs of victims and placards reading "Respect Human rights" and "Stop the massacre".
"The military killed thousands of people, this is a massacre, a crime against humanity. We demand the court to take action against the perpetrators," said Novis Sugiawan, a protester.
Indonesia is still in Eid holiday week and the group plans to hold a bigger rally next week.
