- Story Text: Commonwealth Games Federation Chairman, Michael Fennell visited Thyagaraj Sports Complex on Wednesday (August 18) as part of his two-day tour of the venus in New Delhi.
During his stay Fennel will briefed by the officials of the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee about the preparations for the event.
Many of the venues in the Indian capital are still under construction, some six months behind schedule with only 46 days until the start of the games.
Recently allegations of irregularities and misuse of funds in the Games-related projects surfaced in the national media.
The event, already the most expensive Commonwealth Games with official estimates of three billion U.S. dollars, has been marred by charges of rampant corruption, dubious contracts and poor workmanship.
Several civil society groups and forums have also questioned the quality of the infrastructure developed for the event, alleging that the authorities have done shoddy and poor preparation of the venues.
India is expecting about two million tourists in New Delhi for the Games, as well as about 10,000 athletes from 71 teams representing 54 Commonwealth member states which will be held from October 3 to 14.
The 12-day extravaganza will be India's biggest sporting event since the 1982 Asian Games. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
