- Story Text: Renowned Indian sand artist Sudarshan Pattnaik created a sand sculpture on Sunday (December 30) in memory of the deceased victim of the recent Delhi gang rape.
The sculpture, modelled in the shape of a candle with a woman's tear-stained face on one side, was prepared by Pattnaik and his students in Puri in the eastern Odisha state.
Pattnaik, known for commemorating the issues of the day with his work, said that sexual violence against women must stop and the perpetrators be brought to justice.
"We appeal that justice be done. What is happening is very sad, because such incidents happening in the 21st century shame us before the world. We have made this sculpture to highlight this issue. My students and I prepared this together so that we and the tourists who come to the beach can pay tribute," he said.
Tourists placed flowers at the sculpture to mark their tribute and prayed for the peace of the departed.
"We condemn the rape that took place in Delhi. We have all gathered at the beach to pray for the peace of the departed soul. We also pray that such incidents do not take place in future," said Ashish, a tourist.
The body of the 23-year-old medical student was cremated at a private ceremony hours after returning to New Delhi on Sunday.
The victim had suffered brain injuries and massive internal damage in the attack on December 16 and died on Saturday (December 29) in a hospital in Singapore, where she had been taken for treatment. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
