- Story Text: U.N. envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura urged for a political solution to the Syrian conflict on Monday (September 14), after meeting with Arab League Secretary General Nabil al-Araby in Cairo.
"There's only one plan, it's called the Geneva communique. On that basis, we have two proposals which are complimentary, one is called the working groups, in other words, opportunity for Syrian people, this is a Syrian crisis, to talk to each other about many subjects which can look forward to the future of Syria, which are the issue of terrorism. No doubt, we are facing a problem of terrorism, but at the same time, no victory against terrorism can take place unless there's a political solution for the crisis in Syria together," Mistura said.
The Syrian conflict has killed 250,000 people since 2011 and has forced half of the Syrian population away from their homes, creating four million refugees and displacing some 7.6 million more within the country.
Mistura also held talks with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shukri, after discussing the latest developments in Syria with Araby. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
