- Story Text: Rain Room, an exhibition that offers visitors experience of walking straight through the artificial rain without getting wet, opened to public in a museum in Shanghai.
The installation of Rain Room by artists Random International made its debut at Yuz Museum Shanghai on September 1 after it showcased in London in 2012 and New York in 2014.
The indoor installation covers a 150 square metre area in the museum.
Equipped with five 3D cameras and motion sensors that can constantly track movement of visitors, the Rain Room can stop artificial rain overhead from pouring out when a person is in the space below it.
Yu Deyao, founder of Yuz Museum said the exhibition would raise people's awareness of natural resources protection.
"The rain room itself represents a concept. For an example, when you walk in it (a rain room), you can see the rain but you cannot touch it. Is it the fate of human beings in the future? You can see the water but you cannot get enough water resource and no more rains. It has already happened in many places," said Yu.
Around 20 people are allowed to walk into the Rain Room at a time, and only spending 10 minutes standing in the "rain", due to the high number of visitors.
"After coming in, I was told to walk slowly, but I got anxious at first and walked fast and got a little wet. Then I walked slowly and realised that indeed I won't get wet. I feel that it's very magical, because there is a big light in front, so it feels very mysterious," said 23-year-old visitor Xu Lilan.
"The feeling of (the rain) reminds me of rain in London, which comes and goes quickly. It gives you a strong feeling. It makes me feel comfortable. The light is also very beautiful. It's dazzlingly beautiful," said another visitor Han Xinyue.
Rain Room is expected to run through December 31 in Shanghai and will tour Asia starting from Beijing in spring 2016. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
