- Story Text: Russia Arms Expo, one of the largest international arms exhibitions is in full swing in the city of Nizhny Tagil in the country's Ural region. Armoured vehicles, battle and transport aircraft, drones and military equipment are demonstrated at a huge territory of 12,000 square meters.
The organisers say more than 400 companies producing weaponry take part in the 10th international exhibition with delegations from more than 50 countries expected to visit the event.
"The Russian military industry makes a lot of good military equipment. The equipment is modern but simple. And more importantly it is effective equipment. And it's actually very good for the African environment. And it also comes at a reasonable price," Botswana armed forces representative Gotlileene Morake said.
The exhibition is underway at time when the U.S. has said Russia is building up forces to protect President Bashar al-Assad in Syria.
U.S. officials have described what they say is a buildup of Russian equipment and manpower. In the latest reports, two Western officials and a Russian source told Reuters Moscow is sending advanced SA-22 anti-aircraft missiles Syria.
Moscow says it sends equipment to help Assad fight the Islamic State.
Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Thursday (September 10) that Russian servicemen were in Syria primarily to help service that equipment and teach Syrian soldiers how to use it.
At the Expo battle vehicles are displayed to the public at full play with the exhibition including the newest Russian battle tank T-14 operating on the Armata platform. The machine was first demonstrated at the Victory Day parade in Moscow in May 2015. It's manufacturer - Russia's tank-maker Uralvagonzavod - is on the long list of military construction companies put under EU sanctions after conflict in Ukraine began last year.
According to Armata chief constructor, the tank's design provides maximum security to the crew.
"Yes, this is the first tank which has a turretless combat module and the crew is placed at the chassis. This (technical) solution lets us provide maximum security to the crew, minimal vulnerability to the tank and keeping acceptable weight-and-dimensional characteristics," Andrei Terpikov said.
Russia now seeks to replace several thousand components for weaponry it used to receive from EU countries that now can not co-operate with Moscow because of the sanctions imposed by Washington and Brussels.
"If we talk about Ukraine, about replacing production we received before from that country - there were 186 examples of military and specialised equipment with components that we earlier received from Ukraine, which altogether comprise a thousand line items. As far as NATO and EU countries are concerned - there were 860 line items, samples of weapons, which means there were tens of thousands of components," said Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, who attended the expo. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
