- Story Text: Relatives of the nearly 3,000 people killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks gathered in New York, Pennsylvania and outside Washington on Friday (September 11) to mark the 14th anniversary of the hijacked airliner strikes carried out by al Qaeda militants.
Family and friends of those killed in New York gathered at the footprint of the World Trade Center amid heavy security.
Ellen Adler came to remember her son Lee Alan Adler who was a 48-year old computer programmer at Cantor Fitzgerald.
"They have nothing of my son. This is my son's resting place. I don't have a cemetery to go to. This is my cemetery," she said.
Andrea Rotun-Sparacio came from Queens to remember her childhood friend.
"Today I'm here to honor Brian Fredric Goldberg, also from Fresh Meadows, Queens. And we have been childhood best friends since the he was born. And it's my job to keep his memory alive. And we come every year," she said. Goldberg was 26-years old and worked for Fiduciary Trust International.
Carlos Rolan, remembering his friend Nereida de Jesus, said, "Just the memories, knowing that we have to keep her spirit alive and should never should be forgotten. She was like a family member to me and I can't ever forget her. And I'll put myself through that pain until my time."
De Jesus was a 30-year old employee of AON when she died.
The first plane slammed into the North tower at 8:46 a.m., followed by a second plane hitting the South tower at 9:03 a.m.
