- Story Text: Dozens of migrants boarded buses near the Hungarian village of Roszke on Friday (September 11) evening to be taken to a processing centre at the camp where thousands cross into the European Union every day.
There were chaotic scenes as dozens of people rushed to board the buses, marshalled by Hungarian police and officials.
More than 170,000 people have crossed into Hungary since the beginning of the year, fleeing war, discrimination and poverty in the Middle East and Africa in the hope of finding refuge in the richest countries of the European Union.
Earlier this week, Hungary's defense minister resigned because Prime Minister Viktor Orban was dissatisfied with progress that had been made in building a 175-km. (110-mile) fence that is to seal Hungary off from Serbia by October.
Hungary is legally obliged to intercept and identify each entrant, but in practice large numbers have been able to continue on to Austria and Germany, with the tacit acceptance of all three governments.
Hungary has emerged as a flashpoint in the crisis, as the primary entry point for those travelling overland across the Balkans. Its right-wing government is among the continent's most outspoken voices against allowing mass immigration. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
