- Story Text: Around 200 refugees who want to go to Sweden waited for a ferry in the German Baltic Sea port of Kiel on Thursday (September 10) after police had convinced them to leave the station on the border with Denmark the previous night.
Police spokesman Juergen Boerner told reporters that Wednesday night saw "a larger operation at Flensburg station. The head of police there assured the refugees that if they left the platform -- they needed a roof above their heads because there were families with children and sick people and for humanitarian reasons we wanted to get them off the platform -- the head of police told them 'please come with us, tomorrow we will take you where you want to go, the ferry in Kiel.'"
One of the people waiting to leave for Sweden was Mian Mohammad Khan.
"I have been a taxi driver for 18 years, in Afghanistan. My English is only from English movies, not from studies," he said.
But for him, (I want) a better future," Khan said, pointing to his young son standing next to him.
Sweden expects to receive 80,000 refugees this year and has more asylum seekers per capita than any other European nation thanks to a generous immigration policy allowing automatic permanent residency for Syrians. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
