- Story Text: Gun opponents held a rally outside of Congress in Washington on Thursday (September 10), calling on lawmakers to make background checks mandatory for anyone seeking to buy a gun.
"We can't take on the gun lobby, well that's just wrong, we can, we must and we will. That's why I said after my daughter was murdered two weeks ago I said on national television, that we have to do whatever it takes to fix this problem," said Andy Parker, father of 24-year-old reporter, Alison Parker, a television journalist who was shot and killed while reporting on live TV.
Alison Parker and her cameraman Adam Ward were shot and killed by a former employee of the TV station in Virginia last month in an attack during an early-morning broadcast.
Parker said House Representative Bob Goodlatte had failed to speak about the shooting, but said his staff is now trying to set up a meeting with Parker.
"Representative Goodlatte I am waiting of your call. But sir I'd like to tell you in advance that is you don't support background checks we'll find someone else who will," Parker said.
The rally was also attended by Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe, a gun control advocate.
"It is time to act, how many of these rallies do we have to act, I think of what then governor Cain had to go through after the Virginia Tech massacre. How many of these do we have to have? 85 percent of Americans according to the PEW research support background checks, you can't get 85 percent of Americans to agree on anything. Are you kidding me?" McAuliffe said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
