- Story Text: Israeli forces said they have apprehended two children near the Israel-Gaza border fence in the southern Gaza Strip on Saturday (March 30).
Footage released by the Israeli Army showed soldiers talking to two young boys. "The children were carrying a knife," the statement added.
Tens of thousands of Palestinians rallied at the Israel-Gaza border on Saturday to mark the first anniversary of the deadly protests, facing off against Israeli tanks and troops massed on the fortified frontier.
Two Palestinians were killed, Gaza medical officials said. One fatality was before dawn, they said, hours before the main afternoon rally, and the other was a 17-year-old killed by Israeli fire at a protest site east of Gaza City.
Protesters threw rocks, grenades and burning tyres towards soldiers across the border fence, the Israeli military said.
Eager to get a big turnout on the anniversary, the protest organisers set up loudspeakers at protest camps along the border, blaring out nationalist songs at full volume. Hamas leaders turned up at the rallies and ordered schools to shut for the day to encourage participation.
The Israeli military said 40,000 people gathered at frontier area but that most of them were keeping away from the border. An Israeli security official said that the turnout was larger than the usual weekly protests but that it also appeared that organisers were trying to keep violence from erupting.
