U.S. Marines trained for urban combat at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in the California desert on Tuesday (September 1).
The Marines, based out of Camp Pendleton, took part in a what they called a "Realistic Urban Training Exercise".
"We're conducting urban operations with infantry and tank integration, just to prepare for if we had to fight in an urban terrain in the future," said Captain Peter Dinardo.
Dinardo said some of those involved in the training posed as enemy combatants and some as casualties.
"We also induce some OPFOR, as you can hear behind me -- opposing forces, so that way we get used to taking contact and reaction to contact, as well as reaction to casualties. So that's what we're training to today," he said.
The training took place in a simulated town, with burned-out structures and cars scattered around to add authenticity.
"The town itself is just to give us a broad spectrum on different layouts of urban areas, so we get used to them during training and train to that, so we're not surprised when it comes to having to fight in different types of environments with different types of structures," he said.
