- Story Text: Renowned cinematographer Michael Ballhaus was honoured by the German president in Berlin on Thursday (August 27), receiving an Order of Merit for his contribution to cinema.
"Anybody who watches your films experiences rapid tracking shots, unusual perspectives and a true vision of reality. Today I would like to thank you from the heart for this vision you have given to us, as well as for countless enthralling moments at the cinema or in front of the television at home," German President Joachim Gauck said at the ceremony at the Schloss Bellevue presidential palace in Berlin.
Ballhaus, who recently celebrated his eightieth birthday, said recognition from his home country was very special for him.
"I am very happy and moved by this award, which means a lot to me because I love my country Germany and I have always had a house here in Berlin despite working abroad a lot. It is very important to me to have my work recognised in this way," he said.
With a career spanning over 50 years, Ballhaus is famed for his distinctive tracking shots, which earned him the nickname "The Flying Eye". He is particularly well known for his collaborations with directors Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Martin Scorsese, working on the latter's acclaimed films "Gangs of New York" and "The Departed." - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
