- Story Text: Four advanced U.S. F-22 fighter jets arrived in Poland on Monday (August 31) for the jet's first-ever training deployment to Europe, where they will train with allied air forces and U.S. services through mid-September.
The jets, built by Lockheed Martin Corp, made their first stop in Europe on Friday (August 28) at Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany, along with one Boeing Co C-17 transport jet and about 60 Air Force personnel, according to an Air Force statement.
" This is the first deployment of the F-22 as we continue to build our partnership and train and work together to improve us as allies and a nation, on how we will ultimately fight if we have to," vice commander of U.S. air forces in Europe, Major General Christopher Bence, told journalists at Poland's Lask airbase, where the country's F-16 fighter jets are stationed.
"As a first time about sixty airmen from the 95th Fighter Squadron based in Florida flew over and arrived Friday into Europe. And they will continue to train side by side with our allies to be able to prove how we operate a fifth generation fighter in Europe," Bence said.
The radar-evading fighter jets are expected to visit other air bases in eastern Europe.
U.S. Air Force Secretary Deborah James first announced the deployment last Monday (August 24), describing it as part of a broader effort to support eastern European members of the NATO alliance unnerved by Russia's intervention in Ukraine. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
