- Story Text: Troops loyal to exiled Yemeni President Abd-Rabbo Mansour Hadi continue to battle for control of Yemen's central city of Taiz as they make their way northwards to the capital Sanaa.
Armed clashes, mortar fire and airstrikes wreaked havoc on the strategic city Sunday (August 31), causing deaths, injuries and severe damage to buildings and residential neighborhoods.
There were no official casualty reports but Reuters footage shows at least one person was killed Sunday and several others wounded in the continued fighting.
"We've had very many cases from indiscriminate bombings from the Houthis. Very many cases of leg, hand or head wounds. Mostly they've been hit in the head or the heart so they die," said Balqees Mohammed, a nurse at the al Rawdhah hospital in Taiz.
An air campaign launched in March by a Saudi-led alliance of Sunni Arab nations in support of President Hadi's exiled government has pounded targets throughout the country for months in the hopes of ousting the Iran-backed Houthis from towns and cities they control.
Militias and army units loyal to President Hadi, currently taking refuge in Saudi Arabia, have made significant advances toward the Houthi-controlled capital in the last two months but the group remains ensconced in Yemen's north and casualties mount in nationwide combat every day.
"Fighting has intensified and the pressure is increasing on the city. We attacked the militias of the deposed (former President Ali Abdullah Saleh) and the Houthis. And we send a message to Abd el Malek el Houthi that we'll get him even in the cave that he's hiding in," said Hadi loyalist Hamzah al Mikhlafi, referring to the Houthi leader.
More than 4,300 people have been killed in five months of war in Yemen while disease and suffering in the already impoverished country have spread. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
