- Story Text: Armed groups allied to Tripoli's government moved machine gun-mounted vehicles from Misrata towards the Libyan capital on Saturday (April 6) to defend the city.
A day earlier, eastern Libyan military commander Khalifa Haftar's Libyan National Army (LNA) said its forces had advanced into the capital's southern outskirts and taken its former international airport.
The offensive by the LNA, which is allied to a parallel administration based in the main eastern city of Benghazi, intensifies a power struggle that has fractured the oil-producing country since the 2011 overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi.
The United Nations is scheduled to hold Libya's national conference on possible elections April 14-16, with aims to reach agreement on a road map for elections to resolve the protracted instability in the country, an important oil exporter and transit point for refugees and migrants trekking across the Sahara with the objective of reaching Europe across the Mediterranean Sea to the north.
