- Story Text: Taylor Swift, Big Sean, Billy Ray Cyrus and more walk the red carpet head of the VMAs on Sunday (August 30), rapper Big Sean credited his mainstream success to Kanye West.
"I mean not only did he discover me, he put me on and took me under his wing so you know without him I wouldn't be able to do, I possibly might not be in this position at all. I been doing a lot of good things for my city through my foundation, I been doing a lot of positive things, taking care of my family and just showing a lot of people especially for my city that it's real and without Kanye who knows I may not have ever been able to do that like that so yeah I gotta show him love to him for that and you know he's one one one man, he deserves everything," Sean told Reuters.
Big Sean's video 'One Man Can Change the World" directed by Andrew Hines won the award for 'Best Video with a Social Message'. The video features Kanye West and John Legend.
Kanye was presented the Video Vanguard Award, a Lifetime Achievement Award given to musicians to acknowledge for their effect on the music industry and culture.
Kanye, who six years earlier jumped on stage at the awards to take the microphone from Taylor Swift and declared that Beyonce should have won her VMA, is considered a pop icon today.
"To keep it Kanye is to not let anyone get in your way of what you believe or what you know the point you're trying to get across, not let anyone block in your creative bubble or lock you in a creative bubble, you know you gotta keep it Kanye with people sometimes, it's just you doing you to the extreme," the 'Straight Outta Compton' actor, O'Shea Jackson said, commenting on what 'keeping it Kanye' means in today's pop culture.
"I think that Kanye, you know everyone can just respect his point of view whether you respect how or not he goes about presenting it or saying it. I think he typically has a real valid point of view and that's something people respect, it's good that he represents that. I think he stands for art, he stands for you know great music and that's amazing, that's awesome," singer Tinashe said of the rapper and sometimes fashion designer.
Whether serious or not, Kanye took time during his acceptance speech for the Vanguard declare his 2020 Presidential Candidacy bid plans.
Past recipients of the Vanguard Award include Michael Jackson, Madonna, Beyonce and U2.
Miley Cyrus, the host of the MTV Video Music Awards brought the expected shock factor to the show, changing outfits numerous times and cursing her way through her hosting duties.
Her father, Billy Rae Cyrus said that 'her whole life has kind of led to this moment'.
"Keep in mind, the world really is a stage, not to sound cliché but it is a stage and the shock value in today's world is so beyond what it was 20 years ago and you know I just think that she's kind of, her whole life has kind of led to this moment and she seems to be very happy and thriving on putting this show together," musician Billy Rae Cyrus said.
Miley's do as she likes attitude is something that singer-songwriter Jasmine Villegas admires about her.
"I mean honestly, when you think about it, how she started and where she is now, you can never really knock somebody for being who they really wanted to be for the whole entire time, how they wanna dress, how they wanna act, how they want their music to be so I think it's great. I mean it can cause a lot of controversy but she's always in the spotlight so it never fails," Villegas, stage name Jasmine V, said on the red carpet ahead of the show.
10-year VMAs veterans Patrick Stump and Pete Wentz of the band 'Fall Out Boy' were awarded a moon man for Best Rock Video.
They told Reuters that they enjoy seeing what crazy things would happen next at the awards show every year.
"That's the beauty of the VMAs, I really don't think a lot of it is planned it's like they just let, it's like MTV sets everything up and then lets it happen," Stump said and Wentz added, "It's like Jurassic Park, it's always a bad idea but it's a great movie."
Viacom Inc-owned MTV's annual VMAs, which draw the network's youth audience coveted by advertisers, awards its Moonman statuettes to the year's top achievements in music videos, but has become better known for delivering irreverent and unexpected moments. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
