- Story Text: Hundreds of migrants set up camp at Serbia's border with Hungary on Tuesday (September 15), after they were barred from entering Hungary in a crackdown a U.N. official described as "really alarming" and right groups said breached international law.
In scenes carrying echoes of the Cold War, ex-communist Hungary's right-wing government effectively sealed the main land route used by migrants fleeing war and poverty to reach the EU.
The Hungarian frontier with Serbia has been the main land route for migrants to reach the European Union's border-free Schengen zone.
Families sat next to tents pitched at the border crossing, while a protest continued at the border fence.
Migrants could be seen clapping and chanting slogans as the protest dragged on into the night.
The Hungarian government's 3.5 metre high fence topped with razor wire is part of a package of tough new measures targeting the migrants.
The package of new measures also includes the creation of transit zones and tough penalties for those who cross the border illegally.
On Tuesday, Hungary's foreign minister confirmed preparatory work to extend the border fence along its Serbian frontier eastwards towards Romania would start, in case migrants start taking other routes into its territory.
Authorities plugged a gap in the fence at the Hungarian border town of Roszke on Monday (September 14) night, closing a favourite transit route for the migrants, after 10,000 arrived in the country on Monday.
Hungary says that by reinforcing the frontier it is simply enforcing EU rules, and that it is not required to accept refugees who have already reached Serbia, a country it has designated as safe.
The United Nations disputes that designation, saying Serbia does not have the capacity to house thousands of refugees turned back at the EU's gates. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
