- Story Text: Germany's foreign minister said on Tuesday (September 15) that "a few steps in the right direction" have been made towards distributing refugees around Europe.
This comes after an emergency meeting of the bloc's interior ministers on Monday (September 14) to discuss how to deal with record numbers of migrants entering the continent.
"Yesterday night at the European interior ministers meeting, a few steps in the direction of a real distribution [of refugees in] Europe were made, but a lot still lies ahead of us. But of course, we also know that the reason for the growing number of refugees in crisis regions, in conflict regions lies before us," German foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said at a news conference in Berlin with his Norwegian counterpart, Borge Brende.
Two decades of frontier-free travel across Europe unravelled on Monday as countries re-established border controls in the face of an unprecedented influx of migrants, which broke the record for the most arrivals by land in a single day.
Brende said his country could take 8000 refugees.
"We have at the early stage said that we will through UNHCR, the High Commissioner for Refugees, receive 8000 refugees from the neighbouring countries and also from Syria. And not with the same kind of numbers as Germany, we are also a smaller country, but we are also seeing quite an increase now in asylum seekers coming to Norway," he said.
German Interior Minister Thomas De Maiziere stuck to his forecast on Monday that 800,000 refugees would arrive in Germany this year, despite some politicians saying there could be as many as 1 million new arrivals. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
