- Story Text: Large groups of migrants attempted to find illegal routes over the Serbia-Hungary border on Tuesday (September 15) after Hungarian authorities stepped up border controls on Monday (September 14).
Many walked through dense corn fields and squeezed under fences near the border in an attempt to avoid the official asylum procedures and registration in Hungary, which could prevent them travelling into western Europe.
On Monday Hungary sealed off the main illegal crossing point from Serbia into Hungary which ran along a railway track near the border village of Horgos, hours before stricter immigration laws were put in place.
Tens of thousands of migrants, including many Syrian refugees passed along the closed off track, in the final leg of their journey to enter the European Union's Schengen area.
As a fence along the border with Serbia neared completion on Monday (September 14), migrants had to find a different route across the frontier.
Hundreds of people were directed to the official border crossing in the small village of Horgos, where they were let through until midnight (September 15), by which time the fence was fully constructed.
Police have recorded over 190,000 migrants entering Hungary this year, including 9,000 entering the country on Monday alone. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
