- Story Text: Over 1200 migrants in a Macedonian camp boarded a train to Serbia on Tuesday (September 15) morning, in the hopes of reaching European Union countries.
The train, comprised of eight carriages with a capacity of only 120 people, was overflowing with families and young children as it pulled out of the town of Gevgelija on the border with Greece.
Migrants have been flowing through the Balkans in increasing numbers over the last few days, travelling from Greece in an attempt to head north towards Serbia and eventually Hungary.
Many are hoping to reach Germany, the country which has taken in the most refugees. On Monday (September 14) Germany imposed temporary border controls to deal with the overwhelming influx.
But migrants on the train from Gevgelija were still hopeful they could get there.
"We are going to Germany, may God make it an easy journey for us and to get there safe, as you can see, he is tired, tired and sick," one migrant said from a carriage window, holding up a small child.
"I am from Iraq, I want to go to German, bye," another migrant man, who also did not provide his name, said.
According to the UNHCR, more than 9,000 refugees entered Macedonia on Monday, a new record for the year. The organisation is worried that the steady flow, which shows no signs of slowing down, could have a dangerous bottleneck effect in the impoverished Balkan region.
Hungary has set up two transit zones to handle asylum requests from migrants along its Serbian border. Requests can be assessed within hours, a Hungarian government spokesperson said on Tuesday.
Migrants can submit their request from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. local time (0400 to 2000 GMT) each day at transit zones. Those who do not submit asylum request, will have to return to Serbia immediately. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
