- Story Text: The French naval vessel, Commandant Bouan, docked in Pozzallo, Sicily on Saturday (September 12), carrying around 140 migrants and refugees rescued under the European Union's operation Triton.
Emergency workers and medical staff performed health checks and began registering the migrants, most of whom were men, as they disembarked the ship.
Lieutenant Commander Pierre Pasco said the ship had responded to a distress call on Thursday and located a very overcrowded boat that was adrift about 100 km south of Sicily.
"They had no food, no more water and no more petrol for the engines," Pasco said. "So we were asked to pick up the migrants, there were 140 on board, mainly men."
The 10-metre vessel carried 114 men and 26 women and children, including a tiny baby, who waved good-bye to the naval officers as she disembarked in a medical worker's arms.
Emergency workers searched the migrants on arrival before they boarded buses headed to reception centres.
More than 430,000 refugees and migrants have crossed the Mediterranean to Europe so far in 2015, a record number that is more than double the total for the whole of last year, the International Organization for Migration said on Friday.
The Geneva-based International Organization for Migration said a record 432,761 refugees and migrants were now estimated to have made the perilous journey across the Mediterranean to Europe so far this year, while 2,748 have drowned. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
