- Story Text: Migrants and refugees continued to arrive at Munich central station on Saturday (September 12) but police said an expected surge of people coming from Hungary had so far failed to materialise.
On Friday, around 5,800 migrants arrived in the Bavarian capital, said police spokesman Peter Beck. But since then, the figures had died down.
"Today between midnight and eight o'clock we had 1,700 migrants," he said.
Police and volunteers were at the station to guide the migrants to arrival zones and provide them with food and water, before they get onto buses to be taken to reception centres.
On Friday, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said his country had finite resources and urged other European countries to do much more to share the burden of refugees.
But Beck said the local authorities had so far been able to deal with the numbers of people arriving.
"We were able to cope with it every day. Of course we reached our limits sometimes. Of course our police officers are here and the helpers are involved as well. We have managed to deal with it so far," he said.
Politicians from the left and right have accused Chancellor Angela Merkel's government of losing control of the refugee situation, prompting the defence ministry to put 4,000 troops on standby to help with the influx.
