It's not an actor's studio. He's a totally different model of actor and in fact he didn't have the willingness to go to a tribunal. We have together a good relationship and it's very direct. For me, the very important thing for me is the writing of the plot, scenario, the synopsis and then you have a direction and sometimes it's easier than people think." - Story Text: French film "L'Hermine" ("Courted") won two awards at the 72nd Venice Film Festival on Saturday (September 12).
Director and writer, Christian Vincent, won Best Screenplay and veteran French actor, Fabrice Luchini, picked-up Best Actor.
The movie brings together Vincent with Luchini, 25 years after working together on the movie "La Discrete".
Luchini plays a newly-divorced criminal court judge, Racine, who is widely disliked by his colleagues because of his sour nature.
But Racine is surprised to find that a woman he was close to when he was placed in hospital years beforehand, Ditte Lorensen-Coteret (Sidse Babett Knudsen), has been selected to be part of the jury in a major criminal case.
Lorensen-Coteret, who is a single mother, then starts to see her friendship with Racine rekindle whilst the trial progresses.
"Exactly. Absolutely, he's President of court and he's very mean, bitter, sour and very harsh and it's very wonderful to play such a role," said Luchini.
The director went on to add that he saw some of himself in Racine.
"Yes, absolutely, Racine is this kind of man with a dull nature. He thinks only the worst can happen. A dull life. And he's in the twilight of his career and he represents order, punishment, and so on, so forth," he said.
"Also, it is a representation of myself. I am quite pessimistic if I may say and in this movie I wanted to show that we can face pessimism, try to be optimistic and give some happy aspects in life an give hope and happiness at the end of the day," he added.
Having worked together before in the successful 90s film "La Discrete" and "Il ne faut jurer de rien" in 1983, Vincent described his pleasure at making a movie with Luchini once more.
"Fabrice is a great actor and we've been working together and he doesn't want to know so much about the film before or the history before. It's not an actor's studio. He's a totally different model of actor and in fact he didn't have the willingness to go to a tribunal," he said.
"We have together a good relationship and it's very direct. For me, the very important thing for me is the writing of the plot, scenario, the synopsis and then you have a direction and sometimes it's easier than people think," he added.
