- Story Text: Migrants continued to cross into Macedonia from Greece on Saturday morning (September 12).
Migrants are flowing in increasing numbers through the Balkan peninsula towards Hungary as Greece ferries them from inundated islands to Athens, from where they head north to Macedonia.
Some 7,600 migrants, many of them refugees from the Syrian war, entered Macedonia from Greece between 6 p.m. (1600 GMT) on Wednesday and 6 p.m. on Thursday, an official with the United Nations refugee agency said on the border.
After crossing from Greece to Macedonia, migrants enter a camp in order to register with the Macedonian authorities. They are then allowed move in small groups to the border town of Gevgelija where they get transportation to drive northwards into Serbia.
One man from Afghanistan said the Syrian refugees were being prioritised.
"We came from Afghanistan in 13 day up to here, and the Yunan (Greek) forces don't pay attention to the Afghani people, and they give more pay attention to Syrian people, and Afghanistan also war," said Ali Haidari from Kabul, adding that he had decided to travel to Sweden.
The price for a bus or train ticket is 10 euros while taxis charge 25 euros per person.
Macedonia is considering building a Hungarian-style border fence to stem a rising influx of migrants from the south, Foreign Minister Nikola Poposki was quoted as saying on Thursday (September 10).
More than 430,000 refugees and migrants have crossed the Mediterranean to Europe so far in 2015, a record number that is more than double the total for the whole of last year, the International Organisation for Migration said on Friday.
The United Nations refugee agency called for decent mass reception centres to be set up immediately in Greece, Italy and Hungary, on the front lines of a huge influx of refugees being received in "appalling conditions". - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
