- Story Text: The winners from the 72nd Venice Film Festival reacted with a mix of amazement and joy at receiving their awards at the closing ceremony on Saturday (September 12).
Films from Latin America won two of the top prizes at the 72nd Venice Film Festival on Saturday, with Venezuelan director Lorenzo Vigas getting the Golden Lion best film award for "Desde Alla" (From Afar).
Vigas, who won for his first feature film, about a murky homosexual affair between a tough street hustler and a man who has a successful business making false teeth, dedicated his award to his country.
"We have amazing stories to tell. We have amazing young directors in Venezuela starting to make films and I'm very sure you're going to see a lot of Venezuelan films around the world."
Describing the moment he found out he won, Vigas commented, "Yes, well, I'm overwhelmed a bit, but this is the product of a lot of work, an amazing group of people were involved. And this is an award for all of them, not only for myself. I was lucky to work with them".
Jury President, Alfonso Cuaron, also took time to explain the decision behind why "Desde Alla" won.
"It's a really strong cinematic view of a story about ethical choices and morality in which the filmmaker took a very brave approach and he was very risk approach and he was consitent from beginning until the end," he said.
The best director award went to Argentina's Pablo Trapero for "El Clan" (The Clan), about the real-life Puccio family of kidnappers who operated in Buenos Aires during the 1980s.
"It was really, really moving for me, It was an unforgettable moment. I love to make movies, I love this festival and having this recognition is something that I won't forget for sure," said the director.
Trapero, who flew back from Buenos Aires to pick up his award, also joked, "No, I think tomorrow I am flying to Toronto and to San Sebastian. I keep going to the other Festival. I will bring the Lion everywhere because I am not coming back home tonight. So, I think I will just talk with the Lion in my hotel room."
Italy's Valeria Golino took the best actress prize as a woman married to a Naples loan shark in "Per Amor Vostro" (For Your Love).
It was the second time Golino had won the award after her success at the same Festival in 1986 for "A Tale of Love".
Other big winners on the night included Abraham Attah, the Ghanian actor who made his debut in Cary Fukunaga directed "Beasts of No Nation".
A total of 21 films were screened in competition for the main prizes at the Venice Film Festival, which opened on Sept. 2 with the premiere of the 3D mountain disaster film "Everest", shown out of competition. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
