- Title: USA-CYBERSECURITY/CLAPPER Cyber threats to U.S. increasing in frequency and scale - Clapper
- Date: 10th September 2015
- Summary: WASHINGTON, D.C., UNITED STATES (SEPTEMBER 10, 2015) (UNRESTRICTED POOL) U.S. DIRECTOR OF NATIONAL INTELLIGENCE JAMES CLAPPER ARRIVING AT HEARING CLAPPER TALKING TO COMMITTEE (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. DIRECTOR OF NATIONAL INTELLIGENCE JAMES CLAPPER SAYING: "Cyber threats to U.S. national and economic security are increasing in frequency, scale, sophistication, and the severity of impact. And although we have to be prepared for a large armageddon scaled strike that would debilitate the entire U.S. infrastructure that is not, it is not our believe that's the most likely scenario. Rather our primary concern are the low to moderate level cyber attacks from a variety of sources that will continue and probably expand." COMMITTEE MEMBERS DURING HEARING (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. DIRECTOR OF NATIONAL INTELLIGENCE JAMES CLAPPER SAYING: "These cyber threats come from a range of actors including nation states which fall into, at least in my mind, two broad categories - those with highly sophisticated cyber programs most notably Russia and China, those with lesser technical capabilities but more nefarious intent such as Iran and North Korea who are also more aggressive and more unpredictable." CLAPPER TALKING TO MEMBERS OF CONGRESS (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. DIRECTOR OF NATIONAL INTELLIGENCE JAMES CLAPPER SAYING: "Cyber espionage undermines confidentiality. Cyber threats and actors particularly criminal and terrorist entities undermine data confidentiality. Denial of service of operations and data deletion attacks undermine availability. In the future I believe we'll see more cyber operations that will change or manipulate electronic information to compromise its integrity." CLAPPER DURING HEARING
