- Story Text: South Korea and China's deputy nuclear envoys met in Seoul on Monday (September 7) and were expected to discuss the halted nuclear talks with North Korea and how to get the isolated state back to the negotiation table.
Chinese Deputy Representative for Korean Peninsula Affairs, Xiao Qian, who is also the country's deputy envoy to the six-party talks, visited South Korea for the talks with his South Korean counterpart Kim Gunn, Director General for North Korean Nuclear Affairs.
The two officials were expected to discuss ways to build momentum to resolve tensions over North Korea's nuclear programme and return the nation to the six-party talks, South Korea's foreign ministry said.
The meeting came after South Korean President Park Geun-hye's trip to China last week to attend its commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the end of World War Two in Asia. She also attended a military parade in Beijing on Thursday (September 3).
During a meeting with Park in Beijing on Wednesday (September 2), Chinese President Xi Jinping, called for the resumption of the multilateral nuclear talks with North Korea.
Numerous efforts to restart the talks since they were last held more than six years ago have failed.
Last month, North and South Korea averted a full-on military confrontation and reached an agreement to improve ties following a rare exchange of artillery fire over their heavily fortified border. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
