- Story Text: Police used pepper spray on a crowd of migrants attempting to break through a cordon at Roszke, on Hungary's border with Serbia, on Monday (September 7).
The migrants, who were being escorted by police to a transit camp, reached the motorway leading to Budapest, where they started walking against the traffic in the direction of Hungary's capital.
When police formed a cordon across the road and migrants started pushing through the line, officers used pepper spray on the crowds.
Earlier, the migrants pushed past police trying to hold them back at a camp near Roszke.
Tensions have been running high at the camp near the Serbian border, from where hundreds of migrants were hoping to board buses to continue their journey west.
With police only letting small numbers through, in the early evening crowds of migrants pushed through the police lines and began walking towards Budapest, from where they hoped to board trains towards Austria and Germany.
Police could be seen trying to hold people back and chasing them, but were unable to stem the flow of people, including small children, setting off on foot with their possessions. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
