- Story Text: French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve announced Monday (September 7) that France would receive 1000 asylum seekers in the coming days to relieve Germany's recent efforts in dealing with the recent influx.
Cazeneuve said France had agreed with Germany to welcome asylum seekers as part of European Union plans to welcome more than 100,000 in the next two years.
"We agreed that the refugees which will be welcomed by France would only be from Syria, Iraq and Eritrea, people which are in urgent need of protection. These people will in the coming days be taken from Germany to a dozen temporary centres around the Paris region," Cazeneuve said in a statement.
He said they would be given temporary lodging for several weeks while their asylum-seeking status is processed.
"As soon as the status of refugee will have been recognised -- as it is generally the case for citizens of those countries -- lodging on French territory will be offered in relationship with the willing towns," Cazeneuve said.
Earlier on Monday, French President Hollande said France was ready to take in 24,000 refugees.
The announcement by Cazeneuve came after Germany, struggling to cope with a record influx of asylum seekers, told its European partners they must take in more refugees too, saying the burden could not fall on just a few countries. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
