- Story Text: Large numbers of migrants struggled towards a train northwards from the Macedonia-Greece border on Monday (September 7).
Crowds pushed against a wire fence and police lines in Gevgelija as they sought to carry on their journey north to western Europe from a provisional camp. Many had to stay behind in the hope of boarding a later train.
The Macedonian government has organised trains twice a day to the north where migrants cross into Serbia on their way to Hungary, but numbers are becoming too much for the places available. Authorities have also on occasion laid on buses after the increase crossing over from neighbouring Greece.
For most, the ultimate goal is Germany, where they hope they will be able to apply for asylum and build a better life.
But the last leg on their journey before they get into the European Union's Schengen passport-free zone is Serbia's border with Hungary, which Hungarian authorities have reinforced by constructing a fence and stepping up patrols, arresting hundreds who try crossing it on foot. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
