- Story Text: Austria's Interior Minister on Friday (August 28) called for the creation of legal pathways into Europe after 71 people were found dead in an abandoned truck near the Hungarian border.
"With legal ways we can protect the refugees and the criminals have no chance for the business," Johanna Mikl-Leitner told reporters in Eisenstadt.
Police spokesman Helmut Marban added that one Syrian travel document had been found among the victims, suggesting that the 71 refugees were from Syria. He told reporters that the Hungarian police had arrested three suspects.
"We think that one of the arrests is the (owner of the) cargo, the lorry, which is a Bulgarian of Lebanese origin. One of them is a Bulgarian and one has a Hungarian identity card," he said.
The 7.5-tonne refrigerated truck was found by an Austrian motorway patrol stopped on the A4 motorway near the town of Parndorf just before lunchtime on Thursday (August 27), with fluids from the decomposing bodies seeping from its back door.
The vehicle had come to Austria from Hungary and is believed to have been parked on the highway for at least 24 hours before it was discovered. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
