- Story Text: Mexico's President Enrique Pena Nieto on Thursday (August 27) announced a re-shuffling of his cabinet, shifting his foreign minister, Jose Antonio Meade, into a key welfare ministry, a move that could provide the experienced 46-year-old with a platform to mount a presidential bid in 2018.
The shuffling into key posts for the ministers could be key staging posts for future political careers. Meade also served as finance and energy minister in the previous government, and could be an alternative candidate to the man currently expected to front the ruling party's bid to replace Pena Nieto in 2018, Manlio Fabio Beltrones.
"I have named the following people, Claudia Ruiz Massieu as Foreign Minister, Jose Antonio Meade as Social Development Minister, Rafael Paquiano Aleman as Environment and Natural Resources Minister, Jose Eduardo Calzada Rovirosa as Agriculture, Cattle, Rural Development, Fishing and Food Supply Minister, Aurelio Nuno Mayer as Public Education Minister," said Pena Nieto.
Meade will front the Social Development Ministry, an arm of government that is viewed by political insiders as a useful springboard for presidential tilts. The ministry handles welfare spending across the still heavily impoverished country.
He will be replaced by Claudia Ruiz Massieu in the foreign ministry, who had previously served as tourism minister.
The president also appointed his chief of staff, Aurelio Nuno, as education minister, another appointment that could be an important springboard for the younger man in his political rise.
Speaking in the capital, he called on the ministers to uphold the standards of government.
"They need to be an example of responsibility, professionalism and a commitment to Mexico. As a consequence, they have an elevated mission to achieve for the nation. Citizens in the following three years hope for a government that is very committed to the great goals of the nation and of our time," added Pena Nieto.
The Mexican president has kept faith with his two most powerful aides, Finance Minister Luis Videgaray and Interior Minister Miguel Angel Osorio Chong even though both have been heavily criticised over the struggling economy and security lapses, respectively.
Another key move was National Security Commissioner Monte Alejandro Rubido who was replaced by Renato Sales. Officials had said Rubido's job was at risk following the brazen escape from maximum security prison by drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman in July. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
