- Story Text: Argentines Clarisa Aragon and Jonathan Saavedra won the coveted Salon Tango title on Wednesday (August 26) as part of the World Tango Festival and Championship held annually in the Argentine capital.
Unlike the more theatrical Stage Tango, where only one pair competes at a time, in Salon Tango multiple pairs grace the dance floor in the tradition of typical milongas, a Spanish word for tango dance hall gatherings.
Couples swirled and swept across the stage while a panel of judges scrutinized the scene to determine this year's winning pair.
Nerve and excitement levels were palpable as 41 tango pairs from around the world vied for the coveted trophy.
The winning couple, Clarisa Aragon and Jonathan Saavedra, are from the central Argentine province of Cordoba. Aragon said the level of the dancers was impressive.
"It's like a dream which you always wanted to get to. It's like that moment arrives and you really never expected it. Any one of some of the couples here could have won the championship and that's what's so unexpected, that you never know who is going to win," she said.
Saavedra said Aragon-- his partner both on and off the dance floor-- inspired him to perform.
"She (Clarisa Aragon) made me do many things in this (tango) and, from the beginning, I always wanted it to go this way and the biggest inspiration I have had in my dance was her." he said.
Taking second place were Argentines- Melissa Sachi and Cristian Palomo while Magdalena Gutierrez and German Ballejo, also of Argentina, won third place.
Tango originated in the working-class port neighbourhoods of Buenos Aires in the late 1800s.
