- Story Text: Hundreds of refugees and migrants from the Middle East rested at temporary camp in northern Serbia on Thursday (August 27) before resuming their journey towards western Europe.
With busloads of migrants arriving at an aid camp near the Serbian village of Kanjiza near the Hungarian border, many are hopeful they will reach their intended destinations in the European Union.
"I studied at the university in Damascus. Now I'm on my way, I'm looking to get a job and continue my studies, so that I can have a much better," Syrian refugee from the city of Deir al-Zor, Abdullah, said.
Like most, Abdullah's goal is reaching Germany.
The last leg on their journey is the nearby border with Hungary, where Hungarian authorities put up barbed wire and fences to stem the flow of people, injuring some who tried to cross into Hungary but were returned to the camp by the police.
Others said they wanted to go to Scandinavian countries and meet up with relatives already there.
"I want to go to Finland because I have relatives there who can help me, who can take care of me. Even though conditions in Germany may be much better, I would prefer to go to Finland because my relatives will take care of me," Iraqi migrant Moussab told Reuters.
According to United Nations, some 3,000 people from the Middle East are expected to cross the route daily in the coming months, most of them refugees fleeing the war in Syria.
"I expect to have a good life in Germany. I have family there, I am a pharmacist. I left my country because of the militias. They wanted me to give them narcotics and I refused and left my country because of that. They threatened to kill me. I know that Germany is a good country for refugees and immigrants and I expect to have a good life there," 41-year-old Shabib from Baghdad, said.
Serbia will never close its borders to migrants, Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic told Reuters on Wednesday (August 26), but he said EU leaders must help frame a plan on how to cope with the tens of thousands pouring into the Balkan region. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
