- Story Text: The Nigerian group, Bring Back Our Girls on Thursday (August 27) marked 500 days since Boko Haram kidnapped over 200 schoolgirls in the north-eastern town of Chibok, by holding a candle light procession.
Earlier in the day, the group marched around town chanting and making their voices heard as they asked the Nigerian government to help bring back the girls.
The Islamist militant group kidnapped the girls and women from a school in Chibok over a year ago.
More than 50 eventually escaped, but at least 200 remain in captivity, along with scores of other girls kidnapped before the Chibok kidnapping.
"Several girls have been abducted, several young women, several boys, several people have been killed as a result of this insurgency in Nigeria. We are lighting this candle today in honour of everyone of them. The Chibok girls is our entry point, the Chibok girls is our entry strategy and we will keep the fire burning until they are brought back alive," said Bukky Shonibare, a media spokesperson for the group.
Boko Haram whose name roughly translates as "Western education is sinful", has killed thousands and displaced some 1.5 million people during a six year campaign to carve out and Islamic state in northern Nigeria. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
