- Story Text: Pakistani protesters on Friday (August 9) took to the streets to express solidarity with the people of Kashmir, with some burning an effigy of the Indian prime minister, after India scrapped special status of the disputed territory.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government this week withdrew Muslim-majority state's right to frame its own laws and allowed people from outside the region to buy property there in a bid to tighten its grip over the contested region.
In one rally in Karachi, about 150 protesters from Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (Islamist political party) marched through the streets. In another demonstration held by welfare organisation Fixit, angry protesters burnt a cutout effigy of Prime Minister Modi. Similar rallies were held in other cities.
Meanwhile, an All Parties Conference, presided over by Prime Minister of Azad (Pakistan administered) Jammu Kashmir, Raja Farooq Haider Khan, in Islamabad, categorically rejected what it said was the Indian government's move to change the demography of Kashmir, saying such acts are against the United Nations' resolutions.
The meeting issued a declaration terming India's abrogation of Article 370 of its constitution as a conspiracy to change the status of Kashmir against the will of its people.
Pakistan, which lays claims to Kashmir, has downgraded diplomatic ties with India and suspended trade in anger.
