- Story Text:Maryam Nawaz, daughter of former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, was brought before an accountability court in Lahore on Friday (August 9) by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
The opposition leader was arrested a day earlier, the latest high-profile detention of a member of the Sharif political dynasty, while attempting to visit her father at a jail in the city, where he is being held after being convicted of political corruption (graft).
In a statement from the NAB, the federal anti-corruption force said the arrest related to the case of a sugar mill owned by Nawaz's family, which has dominated the country's politics for three decades.
Maryam Nawaz is one of the few opposition figures to openly criticise Prime Minister Imran Khan and Pakistan's powerful military, accusing them in recent weeks of censoring rallies and press conferences held by her party.
Addressing the country's parliament hours later, Maryam Nawaz's uncle, Shahbaz Sharif, who leads the Pakistan Muslim Party Nawaz (PML-N), said his family and his party were victims of Khan's vindictiveness. Shahbaz's son, Hamza Sharif, is also in prison on charges of corruption.
Maryam Nawaz, who led big anti-government rallies across the country, disappeared from Pakistani media after she made public a secretly recorded video. The video purported to show the judge who had convicted her father saying he was blackmailed into delivering a guilty verdict against Sharif.
Reuters was not independently able to confirm the authenticity of the video.
Khan and the military deny any media ban of the party or that the cases against the family are politically motivated.
