- Summary: LONDON, ENGLAND, UK (AUGUST 13, 2019) (REUTERS) AUSTRALIA CAPTAIN TIM PAINE AT NEWS CONFERENCE (SOUNDBITE) (English) AUSTRALIA CAPTAIN TIM PAINE, SPEAKING ABOUT JAMES PATTINSON BEING LEFT OUT OF THE SIDE FOR THE SECOND ASHES TEST, SAYING: "We're really lucky in the fact that we've got two bowlers in particular on the sidelines that are world class and we want to make sure that James is absolutely cherry ripe every time he plays, he's available or selection but we've decided to rest him for this game and to make sure that his long term future is in really good shape." AUSTRALIA BATSMAN STEVE SMITH NET SESSION MORE OF SMITH MATTHEW WADE (SOUNDBITE) (English) AUSTRALIA CAPTAIN TIM PAINE, SPEAKING ABOUT FAST BOWLERS JOSH HAZLEWOOD AND MITCHELL STARC, SAYING: "It's always nice from a captaincy and leadership point of view when you've got two senior players like that who are world class, left out, they cop it on the chin and run drinks and train their backsides off in lunch hours and tea breaks, it sets a really good example for the rest of our team so we're absolutely rapt the way they've gone about it and and whichever one of those two we unleash tomorrow they're certainly ready to go." TIM PAINE IN NETS (SOUNDBITE) (English) AUSTRALIA CAPTAIN TIM PAINE, SPEAKING ABOUT HIS BOWLING ATTACK, SAYING: "We could certainly play Josh and Peter (Siddle) together tomorrow, we haven't decided that yet, so obviously Mitchell is seen as more of a strike weapon and he's been working really hard as well on his control so there's no set combinations, we just come in the morning and have a look and go with a bit of a gut feeling. And as I said yesterday, we're not always going to get it right but you try and make the best possible decision that you can when you have a look at the conditions that you're faced with." OPENING BATSMAN CAMERON BANCROFT (SOUNDBITE) (English) AUSTRALIA CAPTAIN TIM PAINE, SPEAKING ABOUT ENGLAND FAST BOWLER JOFRA ARCHER, SAYING: "A lot of our guys have seen Jofra or faced him, which is a plus. Obviously it's been in white ball cricket but I think we've actually faced him in Australia where conditions really suit fast bowling so I think we've seen him at his fastest, guys know what to expect, they know how skillful he is and how good he is so like most bowlers who play test cricket there's times when he's going to be a real threat and we're going to have to weather that." He's obviously played very well last week at Edgbaston but I feel we created a lot of good chances or close chances last time around, especially in the first innings when that ball was moving around and we've got to make sure that if anything maybe we just stick to our plans a little bit longer and trust that they're going to work and be nice and patient." ARCHER BOWLING AT TRAINING (SOUNDBITE) (English) ENGLAND CAPTAIN JOE ROOT, SPEAKING ABOUT ARCHER, SAYING: "He's certainly very confident and that's great to see in a young guy, as he should be off the back of a brilliant World Cup, and as he's made very clear it's his preferred format, red ball, so again, very excited to see him at the start of a journey." ROOT SHARING A JOKE WITH BAYLISS AT TRAINING (SOUNDBITE) (English) ENGLAND CAPTAIN JOE ROOT, SPEAKING ABOUT HIS BOWLING ATTACK, SAYING: "I think you try to use your whole armoury in different ways and make sure that their best balls are going to be good enough. I'm fully confident that the whole bowling group have got everything it takes to get every single one of their players out. It's just making sure that you're challenging their defence for long enough and making sure that they're making more mistakes than you are." - Story Text:Australia dropped fast bowler James Pattinson from a 12-man squad for the second Ashes test against England starting at Lord's on Wednesday (August 14), with Josh Hazlewood coming in as likely replacement.
Fellow quick Mitchell Starc, also overlooked for the first test won by Australia at Edgbaston, was named in the squad but could end up carrying the drinks once the playing lineup is named at the toss.
Spearhead Pat Cummins and Peter Siddle, who made up the pace trio with Pattinson in the 251 run opening victory, retained their places.
Edgbaston was Pattinson's first test in three and a half years, after he suffered back injuries and then underwent surgery, and he took two wickets.
Left-armer Starc played all five Tests on the 2015 Ashes tour and finished as the highest wicket-taker in the 50-overs World Cup last month.
Captain Tim Paine has said he wants to manage his fast bowlers to keep them free from injury, and the weather could be another factor, with rain possible throughout Wednesday.
Australia's victory at Edgbaston was their first in the opening test of an away Ashes series since 2005.
England look set to play fast bowler Jofra Archer, who looks poised to make his test debut in the absence of record wicket taker James Anderson who injured his calf again on the first day at Edgbaston.
Moeen Ali, who made only four runs in two innings at Edgbaston is replaced by left-hander Jack Leach, who will likely take over England's spin bowling duties at Lord's.
While the loss of Anderson is a major blow to England's hopes of regaining the Ashes, the prospect of Archer steaming in to bowl his 90 mph deliveries will excite England's fans.
The Barbados-born pace bowler made a huge impact at the World Cup when he was England's leading wicket-taker and bowled the dramatic Super Over at Lord's which sealed the title for the hosts over New Zealand.
Archer missed the first test as he recovered from a side strain but proved his fitness when he took six wickets for 27 and scored a century in a Sussex second XI fixture this week.
