- Story Text: Rafael Nadal is feeling good about his performance heading into the U.S. Open, despite a topsy-turvy year for the former world number one.
"I've been playing well the last couple of weeks. I'm in better shape than a few months ago, then arrived the competition and everything that happened. But I'm confident that I can play well," Nadal told Reuters at a promotional event for a Tommy Hilfiger underwear campaign he stars in.
The 29-year-old Spaniard played strip tennis with a group of Hilfiger clad models in Bryant Park and also hit a red carpet to promote the brand.
He says the underwear line is "comfortable" and he feels great about how the ad campaign has turned out.
"We had a great session of photos and video and we had some fun and for me it's a real honor to be part of Tommy's brand today and just thanks to Tommy for the confidence."
The steamy campaign features the tennis pro in his Tommy's as well as a towel in a locker room.
Hilfiger says Nadal was a perfect fit to be brand ambassador and once he agreed they even expanded beyond underwear.
"He has not an ounce of fat on his body and I thought that if we needed an underwear model at some point it should be Rafa. I called him in the spring, we've been friends for over 10 years. He said look I've been practising a lot, I'm busy but I'd like to do it. So we added fragrance and tailored clothing to the mix. So underwear, clothing and the new fragrance you have to try - it's called Bold."
Hundreds of fans cheered on Nadal in Bryant Park as he played a friendly game of strip tennis against several Hilfiger models.
While he did lose his shirt, Nadal never got to show off his new underwear, although he says he'll be wearing it at the U.S. Open next week. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
