- Story Text: Over 300 migrants disembarked from a ship in Augusta, Sicily on Tuesday (August 25) after what staff working for Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) described as one of the most difficult rescue operations they had endured so far.
Along with the migrants was the body of a 15-year-old Somali migrant boy who died after being rescued from a boat in the Mediterranean.
Many of the group were women and children from Somalia.
Limping and looking shocked some of the migrants were without shoes as they disembarked from the MSF ship, Dignity.
Medical staff on board the ship said they had to medivac one expectant mother who had begun labour before her time and a man who had been badly beaten.
The boy who died suffered a heart attack on board the MSF vessel and was said to have been beaten whilst in Libya and was suffering the affects of pneumonia.
"On board mainly there were Somalians and there were people really in distress," explained Francesca Mangia, coordinator of sea rescue operations for MSF.
"Some of them, they presented signs of violence and important and serious health problems. It has been, along with all the operations of MSF, one of the most difficult or one of the ones presenting more troubles" Mangia said.
The Mediterranean has become the world's most deadly crossing point for migrants.
More than 2,300 people have died this year in attempts to reach Europe by boat, according to the International Organisation for Migration. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
