- Story Text: One month after Angela Merkel suffered a series of shaking bouts when standing, the German chancellor on Wednesday sat rather than stood during military honours for visiting Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda.
The shaking episodes - all while standing at ceremonies - have unnerved many Germans, who look to Angela Merkel as a rock in an unstable world, and have raised questions about her health and whether her punishing schedule is proving too much.
On July 12, Merkel sat for the first time during military honours for Denmark's prime minister.
Former central banker Gitanas Nauseda won Lithuania's presidential election in May and was heard telling Merkel in fluent German that he was delighted to meet her in person.
Nauseda, a household name from his role as chief economist at a top bank, has pledged to follow the tough stance set out by his predecessor, Dalia Grybauskaite, the Baltic nation's "Iron Lady" and one of the European Union's most outspoken critics of the Kremlin.
The Lithuanian president has a wide semi-executive mandate and can veto laws passed by the parliament.
