- Story Text: Argentines reeling from an ongoing economic crisis and a shock election result that wiped out around 25% of the peso's value took to the streets of Buenos Aires on Thursday (August 15) for a demonstration that included a mobile soup kitchen for participants.
Carrying signs reading "No to the IMF" and "We Want a Raise," Argentines marched through the downtown streets of the capital to draw attention to the dire conditions many Argentines are currently facing.
Meanwhile, Argentine President Mauricio Macri met with his cabinet ministers after having announced a series of welfare subsidies and tax cuts for lower-income workers since his poor showing in Sunday's (August 11) primary vote.
The new policies represent an awkward about-turn for a president who took office in 2015 vowing to slash public subsidies and to correct what he called years of leftist economic mismanagement.
Macri promised to raise the minimum wage, temporarily freeze gasoline prices and increase the income tax bracket floor by 20%. On Thursday, he also announced plans to help people with inflation-linked mortgages.
