- Story Text: Thousands of music fans flocked to the ancient Lebanese city of Baalbeck on Friday (August 21) to hear singer Mayada el-Hennawy perform at the Baalbeck International Festival.
Hennawy, originally from the Syrian city of Aleppo, entertained a packed stadium built at the Roman temple of Bacchus for more than two hours.
She was accompanied by 21 musicians led by Lebanese maestro Elie Al-Alia.
Hennawy delighted the audience with some of her most famous oriental Tarab songs, such as "Ana Baachaak" (I adore you), "Ken Ya Maken" (Once upon a time), and 'El Hob Yili Ken' (The love that was).
"Mayada has a great voice and is part of the ancient heritage so the festival was surely great in her presence," said music fan Faten.
"It was very special, very beautiful. We always wish Lebanon keeps up with this development and brings back the old days," said Ali Farhat.
The singer was performing in Lebanon after a gap of more than 13 years.
"Many international artists love to stand on the steps of Bacchus temple stadium in Baalbeck, this is Mayada's luck and the Lebanese are also lucky to listen to the voice of Mayada el-Hennawy amid everything the Middle East is going through," said Abdo Helo, who was at the concert.
The Baalbeck festival has been running since 1956. It has had iconic Arab singers such as Oum Kalthoum and Fayrouz perform in the past.
"It was great, the organisation was good. The concert is classic Arab music that brought us back to the old days in the magic of Baalbeck," said audience member Naji Othman.
