- Story Text: South Korea on Wednesday (August 19) staged a nationwide civil defence drill, called the annual Ulchi Exercise, where they hope to prepare the general public for all possible emergencies.
The start of the drill is sounded by a warning siren heard nationwide at 0500 GMT.
In Seoul, drivers stopped their vehicles on the roads, and pedestrians headed to subway shelters.
Authorities also staged bomb and poisonous gas attack drills at a subway station in Seoul.
More than 200 personnel from the police, military, fire department, local government as well as Seoul Metro participated an exercise at the Sadang subway station.
"As you can see from a recent terror case in Bangkok, a number of dangerous situations are happening around us. Through this Ulchi Exercise, Seoul Metro along with military, government, and police conducted this drill to practice ways to cooperate and support each other to deal with emergencies in early stage and to minimize casualties," a Seoul Metro officer, Seo Jung-sik, said, referring to a bomb that exploded at a popular Bangkok shrine on Monday evening (August 17), killing at least 22 people.
The four-day exercise kicked off on Monday (August 17) and involved about 4,000 government bodies as well as 480,000 state employees who will prepare for all emergency situations, including a North Korean invasion.
The Ulchi Exercise is run in parallel with the annual Ulchi Freedom Guardian (UFG) exercise, where both South Korean and U.S. forces also hold joint military drills. The UFG also began on Monday and it will continue until August 28. Both drills are named after a famous 7th century general, Eulji Mundeok - consider one of the nation's greatest heroes - who saved the Korean people from invasion from its foreign neighbours.
North and South Korea are still technically at war since the 1950-53 Korean War ended in a truce without a peace treaty. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
